Tur Abdin is a stuning hilly region of south east Turkey incorporating the eastern half of Mardin and Sirnak Province west of the Tigris river, on the border with Syria and Iraq. The name of this Christian region comes from the Syriac meaning "mountain of the servants of God". Tur Abdin is of great importance to Syriac Orthodox Christians, for whom the region used to be an important monastic and cultural heartland. The Christian people living here still speak Suryoyo, an ancient Aramaic dialect. Here life is still pervades by tradition and old customs and the life style manages to remain as it once was.
