Fusine is a magical place, season by season the nature shows its infinite colours, painting the wood and the lakes with unique shades. In winter it's one of the coldest places in the Friuli Venezia Giulia, and often there are the most minimum temperatures of Italy.
The lakes of glacial origin, are placed in an amphitheater created by the limestone ridge of the peak of Mount Mangart southward. The hamlet is located in the western Julian Alps, about 8 km (5.0 mi) east of the Tarvisio town centre and close to the tripoint where the borders of Slovenia, Austria, and Italy meet. The valley is a protected area since 1971, with the name of the Natural Park of the Fusine Lakes.
There are two lakes, the upper and the lower, connected one with each other by easy paths. The first is 929 m above sea level and has a maximum depth of 10 m, the lower is located 924 m above sea level and has a maximum depth of 25 m.
The mountains and lakes in the vicinity of Fusine are popular destinations for mountaineers and trekkers. I went here in autumn, because I think that the fog and the reflection on the lake are the best ingredients for suggestive and enchanting pics, but I'll return in winter with the snow. I love this place because it seems to live in a fairy tale!
